These are a human’s basic needs. Everything else is a luxury.
With the feeling of winter in the air, I am reminded of the basics and how fortunate we are. But I am feeling like I need to add warmth to the list.
This is the view walking to the barn this afternoon…
See the snow up in the hills? Winter is coming – there is no hiding from it.
Snow/rain showers are forecasted for the next few days and I am really appreciating the warmth from our wood stove, the roof over our heads, and the food on our table.
‘May you have warmth in your igloo, oil in your lamp, and peace in your heart.’ Eskimo Proverb
Winter has already hit Homestead – From Scratch – in a big way! My hyperlink function isn’t working at the moment, so please click on the link at the right to see how much snow they have. I like a light dusting of snow every now and then, but I think I would faint if I looked outside and saw that much snow!
‘If one’s life is simple, contentment has to come. Simplicity is extremely important for happiness. Having few desires, feeling satisfied with what you have is very vital: satisfaction with just enough food, clothing, and shelter to protect yourself from the elements. And finally, there is an intense delight in abandoning faulty states of mind and in cultivating helpful ones in meditation.’ Dalai Lama
Be thankful for ‘the basics’, I know I am!
Today I am thankful that I am able to wake up and have freedom.

Thank you to the men and women who have served, are serving, and will serve so that our country and others can remain free!
My son and I were on a walk the other day and he was talking about how Rose is the best band-aid. I asked him what he meant and he went on to say that whenever he is hurt or sad, one kiss from her can make it all better. My heart melted and it brought back memories of my childhood dog, Kenzie…
she was such a wonderful dog and I am so thankful that my son has a friend that he can lean on when needed…
and go on adventures with.
‘A dog wags it’s tail with it’s heart’ ~ Martin Buxbaum
It also got me thinking about all of the animals that give so much meaning to our lives and the therapy dogs that allow people with handicaps to be independent. How lucky we are!
‘One reason a dog can be such a comfort when you’re feeling blue is that he doesn’t try to find out why’ ~ Unknown

‘The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.’ ~ Samuel Butler
Enjoy your day and give your special animal friend an extra hug today!
This idea struck me after doing the ‘Wordless Wednesday’ post yesterday. I then did a search for ‘Thankful Thursday’ blogs and found ‘Grace Alone’ . Her words mirrored my sentiments…Why be thankful on Thursdays? We tend to just give thanks on Thanksgiving, why not share your blessings on a weekly basis? The road of life is hard, let us count our blessings as we travel this road.
There is so much to be thankful for and it is easy to go through this busy life and take it for granted.
Today I am thankful for friends.
Friendship isn’t a big thing – it’s a million little things. ~Author Unknown
The antidote for fifty enemies is one friend. ~Aristotle
It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
I have friends in overalls whose friendship I would not swap for the favor of the kings of the world. ~Thomas A. Edison
I don’t need a friend who changes when I change and who nods when I nod; my shadow does that much better. ~Plutarch
Be thankful for your friends – today and everyday!
