LAMB RACES!!!

They race back…

and forth while their moms are eating in the barn.

I wanted to video their antics, but every time I took my camera out, they were too tired from playing all day and would just fall asleep in the barn.

Very cute, but not very entertaining for taking video.

As I walked out to the pasture with them, I warned the lambs to save their energy because I wanted to capture the lamb races.

As you can see, they didn’t really listen 🙂  The old concrete pile is always a favorite with the lambs.

 

Time to head back to the barn for the night.

Canby is so cute, she has to stop and make sure all of the lambs have made it out of the pasture.

Every once in a while, a couple lambs will fall asleep and not realize the rest of the sheep have headed to the barn, a double-check is always a good idea.

 They all made it to the barn and the lambs indulged me by racing around.  Thanks to my husband for putting this video together for me.  Enjoy!

Ready, Set, Go!

I think this is what the girls said to each other because it has been absolutely crazy here!  Since Elan was born on the 20th, we have had 15 new lambs.  This brings the total to 30, with 11 more girls left to lamb.

Here is a quick recap of the new babies and their names…

Delight’s ram lamb, Gallivanter – to go about in search of amusement.  He is such a cute little guy.

Amber’s lambs – Brouhaha, a noisy commotion or uproar, and his little sister Banshee, feminine spirit in Irish mythology.  The last week has been a noisy commotion for sure!

Celeste surprised me with this ewe lamb, Bountiful.  She is a big, chunky girl and Bountiful just fit 🙂

Veronica’s ram lamb, Gusto – hearty or keen enjoyment.

and her ewe lamb, Hoopla – joyous celebration.

Sahara had two more ewe lambs (lots of girls here this year, not really a good thing when you want boys).  Enigma – puzzling occurrence.

Quandary – a state of perplexity.

Girandole – spinning firework/showy composition, and Maelstrom – powerful whirlpool that sucks you in.  These are Savana’s ram lambs and they are keeping her very busy!

Canby had two adorable little girls.  She is a first time mom and gets an A+ from me.

Her girls are Persnickity – fussy about small details…

 and Panache – flamboyant.

Pacifica’s ram lamb, Rambler – one that rambles.

and her other ram lamb, Jester – joker, prankster, provides general entertainment.

Another one of my son’s ewes, Petunia, had a blue-eyed beauty.  He hasn’t come up with a name for her yet.  I can’t wait to see what he comes up with 🙂

Lamb races are just around the corner and I am enjoying this little break before the rest of the girls start lambing.

Meet Elan!

The lambs are keeping me busy, but I wanted to introduce you to Elan!

I am thankful she was born in the barn because this girl was born running.  Elan means vigor, enthusiasm, full of confidence and this girl fits all of those categories!

You could also say she is full of herself…

‘I don’t want my picture taken!’

‘Well…maybe just one.’

‘Ok, go ahead, snap away.  I am pretty cute, aren’t I?’

We had 3 more lambs today, bringing the count to 18.

Tranquillity

The state of being tranquil; calmness; serenity.

The name of our new ewe lamb and what we woke up to this morning…

Snow!!!

It has a magical way of making everything look clean and new and refreshed.

 We rarely get snow, so it is fun when it shows up…especially since it only lasts a day or two 🙂

Not everyone shares my feelings though…

these two would love to have snow all winter!

I’m not sure our sheep would like that though.

I love how the snow sits on their horns and wool.

Ironside and Ringo seemed very relaxed  and had no problem sleeping in the snow.

Hector, Mac, and Aragon were happy to see us coming with their breakfast.

 

He loves it when it snows and can use his sled to deliver the hay.

The lambs weren’t sure what to make of the funny white stuff on the ground.

 Loving this day of snow!

This girl gave us quite the scare.

After Infiniti lost her lamb, she developed an infection from a little bit of retained placenta.  She was put on a higher dose of Penicillin and I think she is feeling better – what do you think?

She was bouncing…

and jumping…

and kicking up her heels like she was one of the lambs.  It made my heart happy!

 

These little guys also gave us lots of smiles today.

They had plenty of bounces to get out too.

A great day to be outside!

Quicksilver cracks me up, he is so full of himself.

He stays close to mom, but he has a lot more confidence than his sister.

Sweet little Theodora is quite the mama’s girl 🙂

Lambs!!!!!

Jonquil surprised us and had lambs sometime during the night!

We went out to give Infiniti her shots and checked on Jonquil and it looked like she had another day or two…

Much to my surprise and delight, I found lambs when I went out to feed this morning.

Proud mama is Mud Ranch’s Jonquil and the sire is Kenleigh’s Lancelot.

Here is Quicksilver, a ram lamb.  His name means ‘tending to change rapidly or unpredictably’, much like his mom did 🙂

He is a flashy guy!

His sister is oh so feminine.  Her name is Theodora and means ‘God’s gift’.  After the rough start we had to lambing season, both of these lambs are a gift from God.

and her fleece that looks very promising!

 So good to have lambs to snuggle.

An unplanned visit

I always enjoy visiting Tammy’s farm and my son LOVES to see her and her animals. 

I had just talked to her about coming to see her new lambs, but we hadn’t set up a time.  Circumstances made for an unplanned visit yesterday! 

This little (big) guy was the reason for the unplanned visit.  Tammy was in town teaching a class and her son was home and noticed that the ewe was having problems.  A couple calls later I was on my way down to see if I could help.  He is a big lamb and the ewe had managed to get him most of the way out, he just needed a little help making it the rest of the way.  I’m glad it was a fairly minor problem and it gave us a good excuse to see the rest of her lambs.

Tammy has Jacob, Katahdin, and Blueface ewes.  She crossed them all with this handsome guy…

 

He is a Blueface ram

and has a beautiful fleece!

This angelic lamb is a Blueface x Katahdin ewe lamb

and this is her adorable sister.

These two are natural colored Blueface ram lambs.

This girl is a real beauty

and this is her handsome brother.

I had fun watching the lambs play and interact with the chickens. 

My son’s favorite part was this goat.  I’m not sure why she thought his head tasted good, but that’s a goat for you 🙂

On our way home, we saw a bunch of wild turkeys and this guy let me take his picture.  A great afternoon!

Not so ‘Boring’ after all!

In this post, I shared with you the naming theme for this years’ lambs – cities in Oregon.

There were a couple funny names that were going to take a special lamb.  One of the names was ‘Boring’. 

He was born this morning…

Where are his spots???

Not up here…

and not back there.

His brother has lots of spots!

This isn’t a huge shock – his grandma had a lot of black wool.

I also know that a lamb that is too dark or a lamb that is too light can happen, especially with how many lambs we have (we are up to 44!!!).

The city name ‘Boring’ has always intrigued me – why would they name someplace ‘Boring’???

So, I did a little bit of research –

The community was named after W. H. Boring, an early resident of the area.  Now that makes sense!

The unique name of the town often prompts its inclusion on lists of unusual place names.

The name ‘Boring’ is embraced by locals and is found in many local businesses, resulting in many road signs that seem humorous to outsiders.

The town uses the slogan “The most exciting place to live.”

This lamb is going to stand out in a pasture full of spotted lambs and needed a special name.  I think this fits him nicely!

A new flock is born

At the beginning of breeding season, my son picked 3 ewes to breed to his ram, Reno.  He did a great job picking the girls and the lambs are beautiful!

The first born was Echo and she is really friendly!

Here she is with her mama, Petunia.

These pretty girls were born this morning.  You can really see the difference between the lilac in the front and the black in back.

 

The mom is almost solid lilac in color, but both lambs have wonderful coloring.  The ideal jacob sheep coloring is 40% black/lilac and 60% white.

The lilac girl has the cutest little elf ears…

and the black girl has the cutest spot on the back of her head.

So far, this girl is friendly too. 

He has one ewe left to lamb and he is really hoping for some boys.  He asked me if I would trade him a boy for a girl if he doesn’t have any!  He is working on a name for his flock.

a picture of me!!!!

I never have pictures of myself.  My son is old enough that he can handle the camera 🙂  YAY!!!  Paisley is still the cutest lamb ever.

These lambs are a very close second!

We have 14 lambs – 3 boys and 11 girls with more on the way very soon.

Naming theme for 2010 Lambs

It started in 2003 with our first lambing season – what were we going to name them???  That particular year we named the boys after trees and the one lone girl after a flower.  I had so many flower names that I didn’t get to use, so I used the same naming theme in 2004. 

Violet

Birch

The theme for 2005 was cartoon character names – kind of obscure ones 🙂 

Rafiki

 2006, 2007, and 2008 were the years for car names – very fun! 

Lancer

Last year was a year we all needed a little inspiration – so we had Hope, Joy, Bliss, Grace, Dignity…

 

and Serenity.

I had a really hard time with a theme this year – how could we have lambs with no names???

Luckily inspiration hit days before the first lamb arrived – Cities in Oregon!

So far we have Sublimity, Echo, Amity, Wren, Unity…

  

and Paisley the cutest lamb EVER 🙂

I’m looking forward to some boys so that I can use – Ironside, Granite, Dundee,  and Gaston.

Then there are the names that I will know who they belong to as soon as they are born – ZigZag, Rufus, Dufur, and Boring!
