Play and nap and play and nap…

Where have I been???  It has been a month since my last post…that can’t be possible!!!  I wish the time had been spent playing and napping, but that title wasn’t for me…

web-nap-play-4

It was for the lambs!  They spend a lot of time, napping and…

and PLAYING!!!

We have 53 lambs on the ground and should be done but there are a few girls that were covered late, so we will have a few more lambs at some point.

I love watching them!

They find the funniest things to chew on and ways to keep themselves entertained.

Play time is always best when done with friends!

Along with keeping up with all of the lambs, I have also been busy with the Felt Pups…

Kep, the Border Collie, makes pup #100!  As you can see, they have been doing a bit of playing as well 🙂

Frosty and Foggy…

and COLD!!!

My internet has been less than reliable the last week and it is now rainy and muddy again, but I still wanted to share these photos 😉

We have been stuck in a weather funk, ok maybe I have been in a funk because of the weather. Whatever it is, I have been very thankful for the brief moments when the sun shines….

web-foggy-day-12

and watching the lambs race around the pasture certainly helps 🙂

It has now been 11 days since my last post and we have had 12 new babies in that time period and it has been frosty and foggy for all of them!

The still pregnant girls spend a lot of time wandering out to the pasture…

and giving their poor legs a break.

web-foggy-day-1

This picture makes me laugh.  Althea has now lambed, but her legs look so little and it is exaggerated by the big boy, Dreamer, standing behind her.

web-foggy-day-011913

Dreamer is really cute with the lambs.

web-foggy-day-4

Seeing the babies snuggled up next to their mom is one of my favorite things about this time of year.

web-foggy-day-15

At only a couple of days old, they are already trying out what is edible and what isn’t.

web-foggy-day-7

As the title said, we had lots of frosty mornings with the temperatures in the low 20’s.  I am thankful the next batch of lambs is going to come in a bit warmer weather.

web-foggy-day-8

Aragon is also happy to be waking up ‘frost free’.

web-foggy-day-9

We are all happy to say ‘good-bye’ to that bank of fog that would roll in mid-morning!

We have 23 lambs and this next week looks to be extra busy with 17 girls due.

Here is a small sample of the lambs we have.

A bunch of firsts

This week has been busy, we are up to 12 lambs!  While I was cleaning lamb pens this morning, I was thinking about the week and realized there were a bunch of firsts that happened in the barn this week.

web-liberty-and-darby

We finally got to see what Liberty had inside that big belly of her’s!  This is a comparison I did shortly before she lambed.  Liberty is on the left and her mom, Darby, is on the right.  I took the photo of Darby shortly before she lambed and had triplets – Liberty, Chevelle, and Debonair.  I had a feeling Liberty had triplets as well…

web-firsts-6

this is what I found when I came home Thursday morning, I checked an hour earlier and she hadn’t lambed yet!

This is a big first for Liberty, she has always had singles!

When I found them, they were everywhere!  The little one was being taken care of by another ewe, the big girl was with the flock, and the boy was with Liberty.  The girls were vigorous and screaming for mom, the boy was weak and chilled.  I rubbed and dried and tried to get him up and nursing, but he preferred to lay there and whine.  He didn’t have much of a sucking reflex and this is a big concern with a newborn lamb.  I headed to the house with him to warm him up.

What’s the fastest way to warm up a lamb….

web-firsts-5

in a warm bath!  Another first for me 🙂  His whining stopped shortly after putting him in the warm water and he started perking up.  I needed to get him dry…what’s the best way to dry a lamb, you ask….

web-firsts-4

yep, a blow dryer!  Definitely a first time I have used my blow dryer on a lamb!  He seemed to enjoy the warm air and really started to get antsy.

web-firsts-3

That looks better!  He got a little fleece jacket to keep him warm and I took him back to mom.

web-firsts-8

Once we got back to the barn, I gave the girls little fleece jackets too and made sure everyone was eating.  I grabbed my scale to see just how small the little girl was – 5 pounds!  Her brother and sister each weighed 9 pounds!  No wonder she felt light.  Here she is next to Broderick, the big boy born a few days earlier.

web-firsts-7

Bellies full and sound asleep.

While I was checking on the triplets one last time before going to bed, I found first timer, Opal, lambing.  I observed from a distance and saw the first one be born.  She was very attentive and did a good job cleaning the lamb.  I was shocked to see our llama walk over to the lamb and do this…

web-firsts-2

he was actively cleaning the lamb!  Opal didn’t like me being so close, but I had to take a picture of him with the lamb.  Once I backed up, Opal went back to cleaning and seemed to appreciate the help from Magoo.

Opal had twin girls –

Bittersweet

Yesterday was a bittersweet day.

As you saw in my previous post, we had our first lamb!  Always time for a celebration.

The bitter part of the day, is that we had to say ‘good-bye’ to our old girl, Venus.

IMG_7223

She has quite the story and I wish she could have told me her tales.  She travelled all the way from an island off of Maine, where she lived with a flock of Jacob sheep.  She lived with Ingrid Painter for the majority of her life and came here a couple of years ago.  In that time, she managed to work her way into my heart in a stand offish way.  We spent some quality time together over the last couple weeks as I could see she was deteriorating.  I think she had a stroke or something along those lines Saturday and I told my husband that we were going to need to evaluate her on Sunday and make a tough decision if she didn’t look any better.  She passed away some time during the night.  Rest well, sweet Venus.

Farm life gives you so many opportunities to marvel at the circle of life.  As were saying ‘good-bye’ to Venus, we were saying ‘hello’ to Hyacinth’s lamb…

Lisette and Hyacinth do most things together, so I wasn’t surprised to find Lisette with lambs this morning…

A lovely, little ram lamb with great markings and a beautiful fleece!

Six of you picked Hyacinth as the first to go and the two winners are…

Penny Johnson

and

Mary Just

I will be sending you your calendars very soon!

Stay tuned for more lamb photos, this week should be very exciting 🙂

Who is going to be first?

Posted in: Jacob Sheep, Lambing, Uncategorized. Tagged: 2013 jacob lambs, jacob lambs, Jacob Sheep, Lambing. 22 Comments

With 10 girls being bred all at the same time, that is a silly question to ask, but it is fun to guess anyways.

web-whos-first-11

Do you want to guess along with me?

To make it extra fun, I’ll give away a couple of calendars that feature my felt pups.

IMG_8399

For everyone that guesses correctly, I’ll draw 2 names and announce the winners.  Contest ends as soon as one of the following girls lambs.

The choices are…

web-whos-first-8

Carrera

web-whos-first-4

Calgary on the left and Shana on the right.  Neither are looking very pregnant.  Calgary’s lambing history is unknown and Shana is a first timer, so they could easily be hiding a single in there.

web-whos-first-15

Liberty…

web-whos-first-12

here is another view, just in case you weren’t sure if she was pregnant in that other picture – ha!

Precious

web-whos-first-6

Opal

web-whos-first-3

Bronwen

web-whos-first-2

Hyacinth

and Infiniti.

The due date is the 8th of January, we’ll see how close they are 😉  You can leave a comment here or on my Facebook page.

no, not for Christmas…only 12 days away.

no, not the number of felt pups I have to finish before Christmas…only 6 to go.

I am talking about the countdown to LAMBS!!!

web-lambs-2

Only 26 days to go before our pastures are full of little spotted lambs again.

web-countdown-2

For now, the girls are hanging out.  Enjoying the sunshine when it comes out and being thankful for a cozy barn when it doesn’t….

and secretly devising plans on how to get in the pastures I am holding back for when the lambs are here…

web-countdown-1

only 26 days girls and then I will open the gate for you.

For a complete listing of who was bred to who, you can visit our Breeding Line-up page.  Stay tuned for bouncing lambs!

A day at the races!

It has been on my ‘agenda’ to someday go watch a horse race in person.  When I was in highschool, I qualified for 4-H State Fair a couple times and when you were riding in the outside warm-up arena and the timing was just right, you could catch a glimpse of the race horses over the fence.  In an interesting twist, my brother has been training race horses for the last year or so and I was determined to go watch one of the races that he had horses entered in.  Timing hasn’t worked for one reason or another and then he was on the road with them for 3 months this Summer/Fall and distance was an issue.

As luck would have it, he had 3 horses entered this weekend and it was fairly close to home!  I made last minute plans and we headed North.

web-IMG_8140

I went to the barn with my brother and watched while he finished getting the horses ready.

web-IMG_8150

Legs were wrapped and last minute preparations were taken care of.

web-IMG_8151

This is Stella, love him.

web-IMG_8165

Owl was the first up and was ponied to the racetrack.

web-IMG_8187

The saddles are ridiculously small in person!!!

web-IMG_8209

My son and his cousin with my mom.  We stayed with my mom and dad last night we all travelled up to the races together.

web-IMG_8201

Everyone was excited to see the horses 🙂

web-IMG_8244

I didn’t get any great shots of Owl running, but I love all of the smiles in this photo after he won!

web-IMG_8281

Next up was my favorite, Stella.  Here he is in the lead…

web-IMG_8285

still in the lead…

web-IMG_8288

and he wins!!!

web-IMG_8311

Good boy Stella!

web-IMG_8340

Thanks to a little help from my brother, this board makes a bit more sense to me.

web-IMG_8343

Playing the ‘Call to Post’.

web-IMG_8322

The last to race was Rogue.

web-IMG_8355

Being ponied out to the starting gate.

web-IMG_8378

Rogue has been running really well and we were all excited to see this race.

web-IMG_8379

He ran well…

web-IMG-8380

but it wasn’t meant to be today.  He was edged out at the last moment and came in second place.

It would have been amazing for all 3 of the horses to come in 1st place, but it was still super fun to watch them all do so well!!!

I am really proud of my brother and the job he has done with these horses.  He takes their training very serious and he builds their whole mind instead of just training them for the track.  Stella went with us on one of the cow moving trips and he was such a trooper.

I can now say I have been to the races!

Smart Little Dalton

Dalton is one of our rams and the poor guy doesn’t have the stature some of the others do.

Here he is with his buddy, Aragon.

I actually prefer his size to some of the bigger boys…

and what he lacks in size, he makes up for in smarts.  He likes to stand on the mound of dirt under the tree.

He is such a nice boy, he doesn’t let his small size bother him and even when Aragon is picking on him, he continues to rub faces and be friends.

Until today, he must have had enough…

because he told Aragon to ‘STOP IT!’ 🙂

I just love our sheep and how they break the mold of being ‘stupid sheep’!

A BIG Shout Out!

I want to send a big THANK YOU out to everyone that has supported this small business!

My dear husband that puts up with my crazy schemes, the friends I can bounce ideas off of, my mom who I can call at all hours to discuss and brainstorm, and our fabulous customers!!!

My studio was open today for ‘Small Business Saturday’ and we had a great time.  For those who couldn’t make it, due to distance or schedule, I am offering FREE SHIPPING in my Etsy Store.  This special will continue for the rest of the month!  Use the code SHOPSMALL.

Having the studio open was a great excuse to finally get it cleaned up, organized, and find someplace for all of that fleece!  I can finally see the bed in the little bedroom and you can walk on the floor in there now 🙂  Tomorrow I will be sorting through the fleeces and deciding what their fate will be – roving, yarn, batts, felt, for sale, or a special project for me.

Here are some close-ups.

Felt critters, felt kits, yarn, and colored roving.

More felt kits, felt owls, felt sheep, bird pillow, prints, and cards.

Aromatic felt soaps.

Books to make your own Felted Friends!

Colorful Nuno Felted Scarves.

I did a little of my own small business shopping and bought a couple Bluefaced lamb fleeces from Tumble Creek Farm in Bend, OR.  They arrived a few days ago and I spent part of today washing and dyeing them.

Any guesses on what they are going to become…

Little Felt Poodles 🙂

Thank you again for everyone that has supported us!
