Shearing Day!

Posted by kenleighacres on December 6, 2011

What a weekend!  We had 43 sheep sheared, fleeces were skirted, fleece samples were taken from each fleece, sheep were vaccinated and wormed, lambing pens were cleaned, the sheep area had a fresh layer of straw put down, fleeces were put in my shop, and lots of fun was had!

I finally felt prepared enough to have an open invitation for shearing and I am so glad I did.  We got so much done!  Three great ladies and my husband helped with shearing on Saturday.  We rotated through the various jobs that needed done.

Here is Annette (all the way from California), Bethany, and Toni skirting a fleece.  Skirting a fleece means to remove all of the undesirable parts of the fleece before packaging it up for use or sale.  This can be done at shearing time or later and usually it is later, but it is so nice to have it done at shearing time.  Now I don’t have 40+ fleeces sitting there staring at me telling me that they need to be skirted!  I threw lots of terms at them and I did my best to answer all the questions.  They said they learned lots, I hope they were telling the truth 😉

The whole day was possible thanks to our shearer, Jenny.  She handles the sheep gently, the fleeces come off beautifully, and she has some pretty cool stories – I think that last statement is part of the job description.

As a whole, I am really pleased with this year’s batch of fleeces.

Here is a sample from one of the ewe lambs!  The length is about 4 1/2″ and so pretty!!!

Here is about 1/4 of the fleeces.  They are now piled in my shop and I desperately need some shelves in there to organize them!

I love the crisp, black and white look when they are freshly shorn.

With the bulky wool gone, you can really see the pregnant bellies!

Veronica is already looking big and she still has 6 weeks to go.  She is the one that had triplets last year, I wonder if she will have triplets again???

Chevelle still has her girly figure, but I am hoping there is a lamb hiding in there.  She hasn’t lambed for the last 2 years, but there is a hint of an udder developing.  We drew blood from her and a couple other girls and have sent it in for pregnancy testing.  Patience isn’t something I am really good at 😉  Keeping my fingers crossed they all come back as confirmed pregnant.   We should know on Friday!

Little Emeline is still cute as ever and losing her fleece made her horns look even bigger!

On Sunday another friend came over and we cleaned the lambing pens, creep area, spread straw, and spruced everything up.  We had a great time chatting as we worked away.  20 days and counting for the lambing to begin!

For those that are interested, fleeces will be added to my Local Harvest store in the next week or two.  Please send me an e-mail if you are looking for a particular type of jacob fleece…there are many to choose from!

The naming theme for this year’s lambs

Coming up with a naming theme for this year’s lambs has taken longer than normal.  I have had a couple ideas, but a few didn’t have enough boy names or girl names.  With 34 ewes due to lamb, the list needs to be lengthy with plenty for the boys and girls.  My mom and dad gave me a great book for my birthday earlier this year and it has a whole bunch of themes.  As I was looking through the book, the names in one of the themes really caught my attention.  Here are some examples – Ballyhoo, Moxie, Dapperling, Brouhaha, Casanova, Zesty, and Felice.  Very fun 🙂  I didn’t really understand the name of the theme though.  They called it ‘personality’, some of the names fit but not all.  While I was at my parents’ over the weekend, I was sharing some of the names with them and my dad said ‘Esprit de corps’ and I probably had a very perplexed look on my face 😉  We then looked up the term in the dictionary and it is french for ‘group spirit’.  The full definition is – a feeling of pride in belonging to a group and a sense of identification with it.  So our theme this year is ‘Esprit de corps’ or Group Spirit.

As much as I like the group of names, there are a few that will not be used…Bonkers, Boomerang, and Gigolo – ha ha!

I am looking forward to the arrival of lambs and now feel a little more prepared.

Shearing is this Saturday and lambing is only 4 weeks away!

Poor chickens

The rain has finally arrived here in the Northwest and our once empty creek, now has water in it.

Which means the chickens have lost their favorite hang out…

under the bridge.  They had the best dust baths down there and they would spend a lot of the day under there.

They were in denial about it yesterday and continued to walk through the creek looking for their spot.

Today, they just seem perplexed.

They keep looking, but can’t seem to find where it went 🙂

Now, for the real question…have they figured out how to cross the bridge?

or are they flying/hopping/swimming across the water?

It took her awhile, but she did finally jump up and walk across the bridge.

Sorry girls, it is going to be awhile before you see your favorite spot again.

Not my favorite sheep today!

Reno and Holly are not on my good list today.

Holly wasn’t bred this fall due to the issues she had after lambing this year (she had polio and still hasn’t regained all of her eyesight).  Because she isn’t bred, she spent the day making googly eyes at Reno from a couple fences away.  Reno was determined to not let those fences get in this way!

You can see Holly on the right side of this picture.  All of the other ewes are eating hay in the barn.  She was pathetically calling to Reno and batting her eyes at him.

‘Who me?’

It wouldn’t have been a problem, except Reno was really trying to take the fence down.  You can see the marks on this poor post.

He was also taking his frustrations out on his poor pasture pals.

Yes, you mister…you are in trouble!

It wouldn’t have been a big deal, but I finally caught my son’s cold and am feeling like crud today.  The last place I wanted to be was outside chasing sheep around, especially when there was a nice, cozy fire inside.

I couldn’t really be mad at her, but it took me awhile to figure out what I was going to do.  I finally decided that putting her in the front of the barn with a buddy for a couple days would be the easiest thing.  She wasn’t cooperating at first…

but I finally convinced her that it was in her best interest 🙂

Little Emeline was more than eager to come up to the front of the barn with her mom and Avalon decided it looked like a good idea too and I wasn’t up to arguing with her.  So, Holly is confined to the barn for a couple days along with her two buddies.

This isn’t the first time Holly has made romantic gestures towards a ram when I haven’t wanted her bred.  A couple years ago, I wasn’t going to have her bred because she was part of my group for teaching herding lessons.  She had different ideas and I finally gave in and opened the gate for her to join Julian’s breeding group.  In that case, I was very glad I did because I love my Mollala girl…the resulting lamb from that year.   This year is different and I am not giving into her!

We will be putting up the temporary fence at the end of the barn in a couple weeks in preparation of lambing and that should take care of the situation in the future.

In other news…it looks like winter is here.  We have had fresh snow on the hills behind our house the last two mornings.

Time to go back inside and enjoy the fire 😉

A very nice thing to come home to…

I had a great time at Fiber Mania, but unfortunately I didn’t take many pictures.  I think I was too preoccupied with the felting Joan and I were doing in our booth – she was making flowers for Christmas gifts and I was making more sheep.  We educated quite a few people on the very addicting craft of needle felting.

This sheep almost came home with me, but practicality won out and I resisted the temptation.

As much fun as the weekend was, I was very excited to get home and see what was waiting there for me…

a clean barn and new (old) feeders!

While I was gone during the weekend, my brother came over and fixed 3 of the feeders that were out of commission.  A few of the girls were having trouble eating because there wasn’t enough room at the feeders.

Now there is plenty!

My brother made these feeders a few years ago and I love the design.  There is a spot for each sheep to put their head in (with plenty of room for the horns) and eat.  We have a few girls that like to use intimidating gestures and push the other sheep away, but they can’t do that with these feeders.

Equally as exciting as the feeders, was the fact that my husband cleaned the barn!  This was our annual, clear EVERYTHING out of the barn with the tractor.  It is a pretty big job and something neither of us look forward to, but it is so nice when it is done…especially with shearing scheduled for December 3rd and lambing due to start at the end of December.

Ahhh, now I can take a deep breath 🙂  Thanks guys!

Almost there…

I have been felting like a crazy person and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel!  Fiber Mania is this weekend and I am almost done with all of the projects that have been on my mind.

Here is a sample of what is boxed up and ready to go…yep, I don’t leave until tomorrow and everything is boxed up!

A bunch of bags – here are some close-ups…

A rooster with a lot of attitude…

A whimsical, flying sheep…

a brown llama…

a llama with flying hair…

and a border collie doing it’s job.

All the colors of the rainbow (plus some) in felt.

Nuno felt scarves.

Felting kits.

Little sheep with pretty bows.

More sheep with horns.

Gift sets with felt sheep, felt bowl, and felt soaps.

I am looking forward to this new fiber show and I know it will be a great weekend spent with a good friend and meeting new ones.

Make sure and visit the Kenleigh Acres booth and say ‘hi’ if you come.

Geez girls…

I knew this coming lambing season was going to have moments of craziness, but I just sat down with the schedule and realized there are 12 girls due within a 3 day period!  I am already having flashbacks to last year when I came home to 3 girls with 7 lambs and Veronica wanting all of them for her own 🙂

Sure enough, Veronica is due smack dab in the middle of the day that 6 of them are due.

We’ll see how many she tries to take this year 🙂

Lambing season is sneaking up very quickly…only 7 weeks to go.

It feels like the calm before the storm.  The girls seem relaxed and calm…you can see it in their faces in this picture.

I finally managed to get a picture of two of my favorites – Mollala and Delight.  They are usually under my feet trying to get scratches.

The younger girls just want fed – thank you very much!

The boys are all just hanging out, getting along…most of the time.

We have them split up into two different groups and for the most part they are all getting along very well.  The 3 younger boys are learning their place in the pecking order from Mac…

and he has no problem reminding them that he is at the top 🙂

For Chai Chai…

On a recent blog post, Chai Chai left a comment asking if I had plans to make any little felt sheep with horns.  I had an idea in my head and had time this morning to try it out…

Instead of making a generic sheep with horns, I thought it would be fun to make one of her sheep.  She has Cascade Sheep and you can visit her and her sheep on her blog – Homestead…From Scratch

I used her ewe, Avalon, as a model.  She has been a bit under the weather and I hope she is feeling better very soon!

I see a new line of little felt sheep being created in the studio 🙂

All in a day’s work

Kate has a huge work ethic and is always looking for the next job that needs done…luckily there is plenty for her to do, on and off the farm.

She is happiest when she has something for those intense eyes to lock onto.

We have enough grass at the moment that the sheep are being rotated through different pastures.  This group includes the two retired girls, Holly and Dolly, and the ewe lambs.  I was hoping to only keep 2 ewe lambs this year, but as you can see I wasn’t very successful 🙂

The sheep are eager to move when Kate is in the pasture, unfortunately Magoo the llama isn’t so easy.

This is Kate’s least favorite job, she likes to pretend she can’t see him 😉

Magoo shares her dislike of being herded, but eventually he follows the sheep.

On to the next job…

rounding the chickens up.

She even has my back when I miss count and forget one.  Of course it was one of the RIR that was trying to stay out all night.  The two we have are very naughty chickens.

Kate’s off the farm job is hazing geese at a local college.  We didn’t find any geese for her to chase this day…

but this is a common sight.

The geese are very messy and destructive.  Kate uses her intense eye to stalk them, much like their natural predators and they fly off looking for a safer place to hang out.

My son’s dog, Rose, likes to go too but she doesn’t have the same serious approach to her work.   She likes to use her happy bounce to scare the geese.

They make quite the pair!  Kate tries to ignore Rose just like she does with Magoo 😉

I have been madly preparing for a couple shows coming up in November.  The first show is Fiber Mania in Grants Pass, November 12-13.  I am really excited about this one because my friend Joan from Mud Ranch is going to come up from California and share a booth with me.  The second event is a Handmade Holiday Sale in Eugene, November 26-27 at the Spencer Creek Grange.  This is the first time I have done any shows in November, I am trying really hard to stay ahead of schedule (instead of putting things off until the last minute) so I don’t feel overwhelmed with Christmas just around the corner.

Here is what I have been working on…

Felt Soaps – If you haven’t tried these, you need to!  It is your wash cloth and soap all in one.  Wool is an excellent exfoliant.  Your soap will last longer and you can reuse the wool scrubby when the soap is gone.  The scents I have done so far are – Lemongrass, Honey Almond, Lavender, and Jasmine.

Dyed Silk Scarves – I have been dyeing these silk chiffon scarves that will then be nuno felted.

Here is what the finished scarves will look like.  The wool is felted through the silk resulting in a very lightweight scarf.

Awhile ago I sent a LOT of wool off to Zeilinger to have processed into Batts.  The Batts are VERY large, so I have been sorting them into smaller, 4 oz. batts.  I have approximately 20 of this dark gray and…

20 lilac packaged.

I haven’t started on them yet…but I have a lot of bag ideas circling around inside my head 😉

and last, but certainly not least…are all of the little felt sheep that are occupying my office!

We have the natural colored crew – all made with wool from jacob sheep.

The colored crew – made with wool from jacob sheep and wool from a friend’s border leicester and a little bit of dye.

and the ones that wanted to be a little special.

A little scarf to keep them warm this winter 🙂

Please come say ‘hi’ if you happen to be at either of these events!
