Stand out from the crowd

I was out taking pictures of our very fast growing chicks and there is one that definitely stands out from the crowd…

This is our free exotic chick that came with our McMurray Hatchery order.  I believe it is a White Crested Black Polish.  It isn’t a breed that I would have ordered, but the little guy is entertaining.

It can be scary to stand out in a crowd.  It takes courage to be yourself, but it can be so freeing.  If you refuse to be yourself, you cheat the world of who and what you are.  Some may not accept who you are and some may criticize, but does that really matter?

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”  Dr. Seuss

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”  Dr. Seuss

“You were born an original.  Don’t be a copy.”  John Mason

Take a lesson from this little chick and embrace who you are and run with it!

A big journey

My son and I went on a big roadtrip this last weekend to deliver 6 lambs to a farm in California.  This is the first leg of a big journey for these little lambs.  They are leaving later this week and going all the way to Maryland.  The haulers are showing thier sheep at the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival and agreed to haul our lambs.  From the show, they will be picked up by their new owners and go to New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota.  We left Friday morning and made a quick stop at the vet’s office to get health papers and then we were on our way.  I can’t imagine what the lambs were thinking…one minute they were in the pasture and the next they are in the back of the truck headed down the road.

Here is Thea checking out the scenery, they were very cute in the back of the truck.  They were a big hit at the farm store where we stopped to deliver one of the lamb’s.  I had to politely ask everyone to step away from the truck so we could make it to California before dark 😉  I love how the Jacob sheep are such a conversation starter.

Our destination Friday night was Joan’s at Mud Ranch.  She lives in a breathtaking part of Northern California…however the road to get there is a little crazy.  My son has now dubbed it ‘U Turn’ Road.

This is an example of the corners.  Yes, that is a 20 mph sign with a ‘U Turn’ on it and the road does indeed make a lot of U Turns.  The last time I visited Joan, I told my friend that I was traveling with, that I would not be coming back 😉  Visiting with Joan and her family is definitely worth the drive though.  Her mom made the trip a little sweeter by making her delicious Carne Asada – thanks Diane!

We woke up Saturday morning to RAIN!  We live in a very soggy part of the Northwest (especially this year) and I was hoping to escape it in California, but it wasn’t to be.  So, we put on our mud boots and rain jackets and went out to see the sheep.

It was fun seeing some of the familiar faces…

Lilly, with her adorable ewe lambs.

One of my favorite girls, Paisley, with her handsome ram lamb.

He was born on St. Patrick’s Day and Joan very appropriately named him Patrick.  If he keeps maturing the way we hope he does, he will be joining our flock in June.

We climbed up the hill and enjoyed the view.  We also spooked a few of the local deer – they are everywhere!!!

My son had a lot of fun playing with Joan’s daughter.  They are a couple of characters and were in constant motion, but I was able to get one good picture of them…

both smiling and looking at the camera.

Their buddy is Hank…

An honest to goodness farm collie.  Such a sweet boy – an excellent babysitter, guard dog, companion, and always watchful.

After our little hike, we headed to the barn to sort through the fleeces that were sheared last week.  There were a lot of fleeces!

It was fun to go through them and there were some real beauties in the pile!

It continued to rain until we left Sunday morning, we did find the sun further south on our way to drop off the lambs.

It was a beautiful drive and I love this part of California.  We dropped the lambs off and headed home.  The total drive time on Sunday was 12 hours!  My son was a real trooper.

This is one of the many stops we made on the way home, a rest stop in the Shasta area.

It was very nice to be home and I will be happy when the lambs have reached their final destinations.

Finally!

We have a pair of wood ducks visiting/living on our pond and it has become my mission to get good pictures of them without disturbing them too much.  This has proved to be quite the challenge.  They are very ellusive and seem to know when I have my camera and when I don’t.  They sit there almost sticking their tongues out at me when I don’t have it and fly off almost immediately when I do have it.  There isn’t much cover around our pond, so being sneaky really isn’t an option.

Here are my first attempts…

They are ok, but not exactly what I was looking for.

I captured them on the pond one day while I was doing chores and I just happened to have my little camera in my jacket pocket…closer, but still not what I was wanting.

I changed my morning chores a little a few days ago and I noticed that the ducks seemed ok with me walking by the pond and they weren’t flying off.  Unfortunately, the rain has been steady and non-stop the last couple of mornings.  Finally this morning it wasn’t raining and the ducks were on the pond…

Gotcha!

I absolutely love wood ducks.

The colors and patterns are so vibrant.

It looks like they are nesting in the trees behind our property in the creek.  I have really enjoyed their presence here.

Growing up!

In just a couple of months, the lambs have gone from this…

to this…

Little Emeline looks more like an adult than a lamb.  The jumping and playing has been replaced by eating and lounging.  I love going out to the barn early in the morning and seeing the ‘big’ babies laying with their moms, chewing their cuds.

Here is Queenie and Duchess.

Walter wasn’t the first born, but he certainly is the biggest.  He also has the biggest personality.  He loves talking to me while I am doing chores.

It is exciting and scary and nerve wracking waiting for the horns to come in.  Are they going to come in symmetrical, are they going to have good spacing, are they growing in the right direction?  This boy looks like he is going to have great horns.

Tristan not only has the wide horns that I love, but he has the prettiest blue eyes too.

Here is Adelaide with our llama, Magoo.

The lambs may be growing up, but they still love their mommies 🙂

Fun for all!

Awhile ago we were invited to come ride horses at a friend’s house and it finally worked for us to go this weekend.  Our son was very excited, but while we were driving to their house he was really quiet.  Being the chatterbox that he is I thought something might be wrong, so I asked him if he was nervous about riding a horse.  He said ‘yes’.  He said that he would feel much better if his dad rode a horse too.  I don’t know if my husband was going to riding a horse or not, but this sealed the deal.  I’m glad it did, because it was fun for all of us to ride.  Plus it gave us the opportunity to have a really nice family photo taken…

My son’s horses name was Luv.

She certainly was a ‘love’.  What a perfect horse for him to start on!

Kristi helped him with the cues and the finer details of how to start and stop and then he was off…

Pretty soon he was walking, trotting, stopping, circling, and backing!  He had so much FUN!

Here is my husband on ‘George’.

This is the beauty I got to ride, her name is ‘Darla’.  It was fun to ride again and I couldn’t have asked for a nicer horse.

After we rode, there was a little bit of time for my son to play with his second favorite dog…

a little Jack Russell named ‘Ricky Bobby’.

He is a basketball fanatic and LOVES little kids.

He has some pretty good skills with the ball…

Before leaving we had to say ‘hi’ to Max.

Gotta love donkeys 🙂

Thanks Kristi and Doug for a great time!

Dream Big!

I am so happy no one told this little hen that sitting on rocks was pointless.  I am very happy that no one discouraged her from trying to hatch her ‘rocks’.  Her’s is the ultimate story of dreaming big and aiming high.

Here is the original post about our broody hen.

I couldn’t let such determination go unrewarded, so I ordered some hatching eggs and replaced the rocks.

21 days later…we have chicks!

This was the first one to hatch.  It is an olive egger – Black Copper Maran crossed with an Ameraucana.

I had to be very patient and wait for the rest to hatch…

The total count is 6 – 4 Blue Laced Red Wyandottes and 2 Olive Eggers.

I love the coloring of the BLRW chicks.

How many times have you had an idea, just to have it shot down by someone?  How many times have you wanted to do something, but haven’t felt it was within reach?  Here is a little inspiration from a special little hen.  Don’t let the little road blocks in life keep you from your dreams!

This proud mama started with rocks and now has precious little chicks to care for.

Sure signs of Spring!

I’m so excited…Spring is awakening!

Dandelions and a ladybug!  Dandelions aren’t my favorite, but you can’t help but feel cheery when you see the bright yellow.

The frogs are singing their chorus…

and if you look in the right place, you can find their little treasures.

and speaking of eggs and babies, my rock sitting hen is still sitting on the eggs I bought her.  She only has 2 days before they are due to hatch!  I can’t wait!!!

The other babies here on the farm are getting very BIG!  I need to do a post with updated pictures, they have changed so much!

The birds are singing their songs and busily building their nests.  I love how the spot on this guy’s head blends in and camoflauges him with the bush he lives in.

My favorite part of Spring is when the swallows return.  They are such happy little birds 🙂

In the shop, I have been felting bunnies and flowers.

I hope Spring is showing up at your house as well!

Imagine waking up…

and looking like this!  They give a whole new meaning to ‘bad hair day’!

They may not be much to look at, but I do appreciate what they do.

I’m not sure what is back in the creek (and I probably don’t want to know), but the vultures were circling and very interested in something.

The black areas on the head looks like their eyes, but when you look closer…

their eyes are behind the black part.

They really are interesting looking creatures in a weird kind of way 🙂

A little longer than planned!

My whippet, Paisley, and I headed over the mountain to attend the High Desert Wool Growers Fiber Market Day over the weekend.  The original plan was to leave Saturday morning and come home Saturday night.  When I looked at the road cameras of the passes on Friday morning, my plan changed to staying with my grandparents on Friday night and driving over from there.  Staying with them, put me an hour closer, cutting the drive time to 2 hours instead of 3.  However, that plan changed again when I looked at the weather forecast.  I didn’t want to drive over the pass in the snow in the dark, so I made reservations at a hotel and drove over Friday afternoon.  I was determined to enjoy myself and not worry about getting home until that time came.

There aren’t very many hotel choices in Prineville, Oregon and even less when you wait until the last minute.  So I had to take what I could get.  Unfortunately, that was a room right above a bar that had a happening night life.  The building was innocent looking in the daylight.  The music was so loud, I could feel it thumping in the room!  Morning came very early!

Paisley did her best to convince me that we needed to go back to bed.

It was a wonderful show and was well attended.  I had ‘May’ with me and she displayed my nuno felted scarves nicely…

These were a new project and very fun to make.  The base is a chiffon silk scarf and the wool is finely felted on the top and through the scarf.

I also had a lot of bags…

I wish I had had a chance to walk around and visit the other vendors, but Paisley wasn’t willing to watch the booth.

I checked the road conditions mid-day and it didn’t look good.  I really wanted to go home, but again I didn’t want to drive in the dark and the snow and ice.  After I packed everything up, I made the choice to stay in Bend and drive home in the daylight on Sunday.  All of a sudden my quick one day trip, wasn’t turning out to be so quick!

Paisley and I enjoyed a nice, quiet stay in Bend and woke up to snow on the ground…not a good sign for driving over the pass!  It was apparent the roads weren’t going to improve much, so I left at noon and headed up the mountain.  It was much worse in my imagination.  I was glad to be home and Paisley quickly crashed on her bed in front of the fire 🙂

Veronica makes it look easy

Veronica had triplets on March 2nd and she has made the entire event look very easy.

I am not a fan of triplets because they can lead to a lot of extra work.  The chance of having a difficult labor is increased, making sure they all have enough to eat is usually a concern, making sure mom has enough food to keep up with the extra demands is another concern, and they usually end up being smaller than other lambs the same age.  None of the above is true for Veronica and her babies.

I have always had a lot of respect for her mothering style, but she is really impressing me this year.  She makes sure they each get a turn eating and when it comes time for her to eat, she takes them to a corner of the barn, tells them to stay and returns for them when she is done.  She does this every year with her lambs, but I wasn’t sure how she was going to get 3 lambs to follow directions so obediently.  Once again, she has done it and is making it look simple.

And as far as the lambs…they are looking fabulous!
