He was supposed to wait until he was 10…

but sometimes you have to be flexible!

My son has wanted his ‘own’ dog for awhile now.  The intensity has increased over the last month or so.  Every day it was a different breed – Saint Bernard, Husky, Border Collie, Lab, Corgi, Boxer, Whippet, Dalmation, etc.  One morning he brought his dog book to me and asked if I could show him what breeds he could have inside 😉

Mind you, we have 4 dogs and he could choose any of them to walk and play with – but he didn’t feel like they were ‘his’.

We didn’t go looking for a dog for him, she came looking for him.

She is a 6 month old border collie that he has named Rose.  She has been here for 2 1/2 weeks and has settled in nicely.  She is from a litter that my brother’s dog, Flip had in December.  She was odd man out and definitely needed a little boy to dote on her.

She has the sweetest temperament and a very gentle soul.

They make a great team.

She is very eager to please and has the cutest little body wiggle.

They love snuggling on the couch together and playing outside.  She can be found running after him while he is riding his bike or relaxing close to him while he is playing in the sandbox.

While doing sheep chores tonight, she just laid down by the gate and waited until we were done.

We have gone on several walks and she is so good on the leash, she stays right with him.

He has been very responsible with her and we are very happy that we said ‘yes’.

Our help ran out on us!

This was not the original title of this post, but things changed this afternoon!  The help that we called in, jumped ship – literally.

We have had a tremendous amount of rain, in fact I can’t remember the last time I saw the sun.  This has created a problem in our pastures.

The sheep are getting lost!

In normal years, I would have started mowing the pastures by now, but this is not a normal year.  There is so much standing water out there!!!

So, I called the neighbor to see if we could borrow a few of their cows to help eat down the grass.

The extra help arrived last Friday, unfortunately I wasn’t home and he threw them in a pasture with the sheep.  I had hoped to move the sheep to another pasture before they arrived, but everything was fine when I got home.

They spent some time getting acquainted…

then the cows started chasing the sheep…

and vice versa.

My poor dog was a little perplexed with all of the commotion.

I’m glad we don’t own cows, but they are fun to watch…

and I love their noses.  This guy was very friendly 🙂

Of course, this one was my favorite!  Look at all of those splashes of color!

They seemed to be happy and there was certainly enough food out there, but yesterday afternoon while I was doing chores I realized there was only 1 cow in the pasture instead of 4 – uh oh!!!   A little detective work on my husband’s part showed that they jumped the back fence and were over at the neighbor’s house.

Their moms are in a pasture near the neighbors and it looks like they were headed home.  They have been weaned since February, but they still missed their mommies.  I was hoping they would be here a little longer than 5 days!!!  Oh well – hopefully the sun comes out soon and I can start mowing.

Scotch broom bucks

The hill across from our house is covered in Scotch broom – a vibrant yellow shrub.  The flowers are bright and cheery in contrast to the gray, rainy days we have been experiencing recently.

While I was doing chores the other morning, I noticed this handsome guy…

and his regal friend!

Their antlers are in the early stages of growing and are covered in velvet.

They were enjoying the quiet morning and didn’t seem very concerned about me.

We don’t see many deer around our house and I had fun watching them.

They soon grew tired of me and headed into the trees.  Bye boys!

One of the big boys now

Remember this little guy…

from this post?

Look at him now!  Patchwork Abraham has matured into a handsome young ram.

He has been living with a few wethers and it was time for him to join the big boys.   Abraham was getting a little full of himself and who could teach him a few life lessons better than the big boys.  It also makes life easier if I only have to worry about one group of intact boys.

Unfortunately, putting adult rams together takes a lot of finesse.  It can be very dangerous and you need to prepare for the pecking order fights that are inevitable.  You first need to evaluate who you are putting together – it helps if you know their individual temperaments and ages.  For example – I know that I can put young ram lambs in with our older boys and not worry about them hurting the youngsters.  However, putting a yearling in with adults required the use of a small pen.

It may look a little cramped, but this is exactly what you want.  They aren’t able to back up and ram each other.  They can still give each other small jabs, but I was there to make sure they didn’t hurt each other.  Once they have settled down a little I will usually leave them for another 30-60 minutes.

The close quarters also makes them all smell the same.  I’m not sure Abraham really enjoyed his warm, snuggly, living wool jacket 🙂

When it comes time to turn them out, we have lush grass or really good hay available.

The hope is that they will be so focused on the food that they will ignore each other.

Wrangler and Junior have been through this process several times and immediately started eating.  They are both good boys!

Reno is proving to be a lot like his dad, Junior, and went his seperate way.  I love his laidback nature.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing all of them living together peacefully.

Here is an excellent article on raising respectful rams.  It is full of really good, useful information.

Puppies, a colt, and a cat

Our neighbor recently invited us to her house to play with her Aussie puppies and new colt – who could resist an invitation like that???  They were all born within a couple days of each other and are 6 weeks old.

My son was in heaven.  He LOVES dogs.  ALL dogs.  No matter what the breed.  Just in the last couple of days he has wanted a Husky, a Boxer, a Saint Bernard, a Border Collie, and now an Australian Shepherd 😉

They all clamored for his attention…

but this mellow guy was his favorite.  I couldn’t believe how laid back he was.  He didn’t care how he was sitting on his lap, just as long as he was the chosen puppy!

This puppy was a little shy, but very sweet.  He is making me tired!

The puppies started to nod off and we made our way to the barn where the colt was.

Such a handsome guy!

He is a big boy for 6 weeks old and my son was a little intimidated.  The puppies were definitely more his style, but he soon realized that there was nothing to be afraid of.

and look… Whiskers is finished!

He did such a great job and is very proud of his cat.  This is going to be his Black Sheep Gathering spinner’s lead entry and he can’t wait to carry Whiskers around while he is walking his lamb Precious 🙂  Whiskers is made completely out of our Jacob wool.

Rae-Ann and her lilac boys

Rae-Ann loves her boys!

Quite a few of the lambs have left for their new homes and were weaned before they left.   The lambs that are left are starting to be weaned by their moms, but not her…

In fact, she likes her lilac boys so much, she thought she would add another one 🙂

The third lilac boy belongs to Ellie, she is in the group of girls that has been completely weaned.

Poor Silverton was very unhappy, until he found Rae-Ann.

I haven’t seen him nursing, but for 3 days he has been attached to her.

Even his new found brothers seem accepting of him.

Happiness is a by-product of an effort to make someone else happy  ~ Gretta Brooker Palmer

I would have to say that Rae-Ann is truly a happy girl 🙂

The many ‘funny’ faces of Tumbler

Tumbler belongs to a friend and he is a big, handsome guy.

His official name is Tuff n’ Tumble.  He earned the name by taking a tumble shortly after birth and breaking his leg.  It looks like he came through just fine.  He was in quite the mood yesterday.  I didn’t get a single ‘serious’ shot of him!

Here’s to the goofy days – we all have them 🙂

I want this out my back door!

I don’t want to move, I just want to move the mountain 🙂

We spent the day delivering sheep to southern Oregon, this was our last stop.  It was hard to leave!

Flora was picked up a few weeks ago and she was quickly taken under this big guy’s wings.  They were eager to meet the newcomers.

Flora was quickly reunited with old friends, but the big guy was a bit of a shock!

He was a back-up 4-H sheep from last year and he is quite the character.  He started bucking and playing with the lambs.  The poor things thought he was going to eat them 😉

Rainy, the llama, was quick to check everybody out.

He looks very happy with all of his new charges.

When the shepherd’s away…

the sheep will play!

See the sheep in the background, that is where they are SUPPOSED to be, not in the garden area and creek.

I had to take a few lambs to the vet for health certificates yesterday afternoon and this is what I came home to!

This has become an all too common sight recently.  The little stinkers don’t do it when we are home, but while we are away.

Meet the operatives…

The lookout, Chance

Master gate pusher, Dolly

and super cute Colton to act as diversion.

He has grown up a little since that last picture, but he is still using his cuteness to create a diversion, in the hopes I won’t realize he is standing in the raised garden bed – WRONG, you are busted mister.

Dolly doesn’t understand what the big deal is.  She was telling me that the weeds are abundant and the grass was getting ridiculously tall.

Ok, she may have a point…

My son and Kate have gotten into a routine of putting them away, but I think I have the gate fixed now 🙂

I sure hope so because the garden is being planted soon!

Can you hear me now?

I am not a very loud person and I HATE yelling, but thanks to my son and a certain border collie…

(aren’t they cute?)  I find myself raising my voice trying to get their attention.

Most of the time they aren’t intentionally ignoring me, they are just busy doing something that is more fun than listening to me 🙂 and sometimes I truly don’t think they can hear me.  There are a couple situations where I need their attention immediately, such as riding bikes at the park and a car is coming or chasing geese at the college and a golf cart is coming.  It would really help if I could whistle, but I can’t…until now!

My husband order this ‘Professional Dog Whistle’ for me.  I love the statement on front of the package –

Commanding Attention all over the World!

It is very high pitched and LOUD!  Not only will my son and dog be able to hear me now, but I bet you will too 🙂
