She should join the circus!

Say ‘Hello’ to Chance 🙂

Maybe they would appreciate her antics!

If I set the wheelbarrow down for a second, she is on top of it in the blink of an eye!

I’m thinking if this girl gets much wider then the circus may be interested in her as well.  She still has a month to go before she lambs – poor girl.

As simple as black and white…

if only it were that easy!

This covers a lot of subjects, but right now I am talking about the color of Jacob sheep.

For reference here is a lilac ewe, in the back, and a black/white ewe in the front.

Jacobs are technically a black sheep with white spots, but the black is seldom true black.  There are grays, browns, chocolate, lilac, and other various shades and mixtures.

Lilac is recessive to black, but I just recently read that the term lilac refers to everything not black.  This makes things a little muddy because in my mind when you breed a lilac (recessive) to another lilac (recessive) you should always get lilac.  The part that gets muddy is when you get a sheep that isn’t the traditional lilac color and not black.  This color supposedly falls into the lilac category but when you breed this animal to a traditional lilac, you can get black, lilac, or ???  It would make sense that this color should be called something entirely different – but what???

I believe Reno falls in this ‘other’ category and am really looking forward to his lambs.  He was bred to lilacs and blacks.

Here is a close-up of his fleece – I didn’t have enough hands to part the fleece and photograph it – but it is brown all the way down to his skin.  I’m curious to see what he looks like when we shear him in the Spring.

I have been thinking about this quite a bit recently because of two conversations I had last week.  One person bought a couple lambs out of a ram of ours and she knew that the dams were traditional lilac and this ram is registered as lilac, but the lambs were black.  She was questioning whether this ram was really the sire.  I would have questioned it as well and I don’t believe this particular ram should have been registered lilac, but he also isn’t black.

The other lamb looked black when she was born but began changing as she matured.  The owner sent me pictures after shearing and she definitely isn’t black.

As I was feeding the ewes tonight I took pictures of all the different colors…

Three different blacks.  There is also speculation that there is an early graying gene that affects the color.

One of the BLACK blacks.

Here are two different lilacs.  I’m guessing the early graying gene also affects the lilacs.  Notice the really pale spots on the ewe closest to me.  I’m not sure about that darker spot on her back.

The traditional lilacs tend to have a lighter halo around their eyes that is apparent at birth.

I don’t have any answers, but find the whole thing fascinating.  I would love to hear from other Jacob breeders!

A whole bunch of cuteness!

Our neighbors went on vacation last week and asked if we could watch their rabbits.  They don’t really like to be held, but they are fun to watch and SO soft to pet.

They are Mini Rex’s.  This is the mama bunny and she came with two little surprises!

They didn’t know she was pregnant and one day they went out and discovered two babies.  She had hidden them for quite awhile because they were the size of a tennis ball and had all of their fur.

This little girl has such a sweet face.

It has been my son’s responsibility to feed and water them and he has done a great job and starts the day by giving them a couple carrots.  Surprisingly he hasn’t asked for any of his own 🙂

On the other hand, he has asked for one of these!

We visited a friend’s litter of Cardigan Welsh Corgis – look at that face!!!

He cuddled…

snuggled…

and really wanted one of his own.

Corgi puppies are so cute!

All of the puppies were sweet and cuddly, except for this little girl.  She was a real spitfire!

I love the places where puppies fall asleep.  Passed out without a care in the world.

Luckily the puppies are spoken for and we aren’t the bad guys for saying ‘no’!

Christmas – all wrapped up!

Christmas has once again come and gone – why does it always go so fast???

We spent Christmas eve with Tony’s parents, Christmas morning here, and Christmas afternoon at my parents.

With 6 kids, spouses, 4 grandsons, and 1 new granddaughter – my parent’s house becomes very noisy!  The boys had a great time with grandpa.

The delicious dinner was enjoyed by all.

The secrets on the other hand, were just shared amongst the ‘older’ boys 🙂

After dinner all of the grandkids participated in a pageant with the story read by great grandma.  The youngest grandson was a sheep, but he ran off part way through – darn sheep!

We also enjoyed a birthday cake – he is now 6 years old – wow when did that happen???

He got this really cool book.  It has 28 badges that he can earn with requirements and sticker badges in the back.

His cousin, Conner, got the same book and we headed outside mid-afternoon to earn their insectology badge.

They each had to find 3 bugs and identify the main parts of an insect.

It was cold and the insects were hard to find, but after flipping a lot of rocks over and digging – we were able to find a few.  They did a great job identifying the required parts and earned their badges.

This is one of his favorite gifts from his cousin’s on my husband’s side of the family.  It has made us all laugh a LOT!!!  It can play music from mp3 players and it records short little snipits of  stuff – music and conversations.  It plays the recordings back randomly.  It responds to motion and will start talking and moving when you walk by.  It has made us jump a time or two 🙂

Here are some of my goodies.  Yummy, soft alpaca yarn and roving from my friend Lisa.  A whippet frame from Kristine.  A whippet sign from Tisha and a new hat from my mom.

I got these really cool buttons from my dad from his recent trip to Alaska.

I made almost all of the gifts that we gave and it felt really good.

This is a little felted sheep mobile that we gave to our new niece/cousin – Gracie Anne.  Hopefully counting sheep will help her fall asleep.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and that you were able to enjoy it with family and friends!

Unwelcome guests

Don’t get me wrong, I love wildlife – but when they come to dine on our newly seeded pastures, it doesn’t make me happy.

We live near the grass seed capital of the world, can’t they find somewhere else to eat???

I’m talking about the beautiful Canada Goose.  We often have a pair or two enjoying our pond, but since we seeded our pastures this fall – this is a common sight…

There are different flocks that have been digging holes in the ground, some are very leery and will fly off as soon as I am in the driveway and some, like this group today, I have to practically jump in the middle of them to get them to fly away.

It looks like they have a little tagalong 🙂

This poor gal has a bum leg.  She would kind of hop/fly to get around.  I wouldn’t mind if her and a friend wanted to call our pond home for the winter.

Just not this many friends.  Today there were only 30, but we have had as many as 100 and it is incredible what they can do to the ground.  They dig holes and pull the grass out by the roots!

They are such beautiful birds and I really enjoy watching them, but not when they are eating the grass that I have been very conservative with.

So, I will keep asking them to move along and hopefully they will spread the word that our pastures are for sheep only!

Now that’s better!

Lambing is just around the corner!

Somehow overnight, my sheep went from looking kind of pregnant to looking VERY pregnant!  Which made me realize that lambing is going to be here very soon.  The first due date is January 24th, but with how time is flying these days it might as well be next week 🙂

Poor Marloe always looks pregnant.  She tends to have big lambs.

Amber, on the other hand, keeps her girly figure all through pregnancy.  She usually twins, but barely looks pregnant.

Ellie is one I will be keeping my eye on.  She is pretty big for not being due until February 4th.

She is already swaying to and fro!

Time to order supplies and get prepared.

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas :)

My poor son doesn’t think Christmas can happen until it snows.  He doesn’t understand that we live somewhere that doesn’t often have snow on Christmas day.  So, we brought snow inside.

It would be so much fun to live somewhere like this!

This is a dog training academy – I love the style of this building.

With a dog training facility down the road, you need a veterinary clinic.  The name of this is ‘The Padded Paw’ 🙂

I imagine this barn to be very warm and cozy inside.

Looking at our little wintry scene has helped me get in the Christmas spirit and he loves to sit and look at it.

We also set up his nativity scene…

and made a star for on top of the tree.  This was also another MUST HAVE before Christmas 🙂  We used felt, a toilet paper tube, and a few jewels.

The ornaments have all been hung…

and Mr. Moose is waiting to ‘Welcome’ Santa Claus to our home.

From all of us to all of you – Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

In search of a Christmas tree…

We usually visit one of the many Christmas tree farms in the area to find a Christmas tree, but this year we purchased a tree permit and headed to the mountains.  We were really searching for some snow too.

We were not disappointed!

This kid is CRAZY in the snow!!!  He is not falling in this picture – he is JUMPING!!!  Geronimo 🙂

He climbed up…

and slid down so many times I lost count.

I think Deuce enjoyed it just as much as he did!

She was also more than willing to help 🙂

She was such a good girl – never straying very far from us and always coming when called.

We finally started looking for a tree.  I thought this one was awfully cute, but the boys didn’t agree.

By the time we found our tree he had to have a little help up the hill.  I never could make it up.  The snow had a nice layer of ice underneath it and a layer over it.  You would crack through and sink into the snow and then slip on the ice underneath.  We did a lot of walking because driving was a little interesting.  I am very thankful that my husband has a cool head while driving on slick snow on a hillside.

Here is our tree – a noble fir.  Oregon forests are full of so many choices!

He would love it if we had snow year round 🙂  I’m glad we found some snow for him and a Christmas tree for our house.

Can you hear my teeth chattering???

We are caught in a bitter cold snap.  Our thermometer has been in the single digits the last two mornings and we aren’t supposed to get above freezing until the weekend.  Going outside requires many,

many,

many layers.

It feels like we should be in the Midwest, not the Northwest.  On the bright side, we still have water in the house and the animals are all doing well.

Here is part of our creek, my son has enjoyed playing with his cars and trucks on it.

and look at the pond!  I was able to walk across it this morning.  He had a great time ice skating across it.

Poor Deuce couldn’t figure out what happened to her favorite place to play.

The four rams are the only critters that don’t have access to the barn.  Luckily they still have their warm, woolly coats to stay warm.

My poor ewes are naked and shivering, but are enjoying the extra food, heat lamps, and clean barn with lots of extra bedding.

Stay warm everyone!!!

A great day at the coast!

The Oregon Coast isn’t known for its warm weather, but we lucked out yesterday!

We have been stuck in the fog for the last couple of days and the sunshine we found at the coast was a welcome sight.

My son’s best buddy lives up the road and we all went on a field trip.  My friend, Andrea, started homeschooling this year and we have recently done the same.

We started in Newport and visited the Oregon Coast Aquarium.  There were 5 cars in the parking lot when we pulled in!  We almost had the place to ourselves 😉  We spent a lot of time at each of the exhibits and really enjoyed ourselves.

The highlight for the boys were the maps they got and they had a great time deciding where to go next.

We saw…

striped fish…

weird fish…

REALLY big crabs.  These are Japanese Spider crabs and are the biggest in the world.  Their leg span can be up to 13 feet!

and adorable little puffins.

This was another exciting part for the boys – the beginning of the shark exhibit.  There is a tunnel you walk through and sharks are swimming all around.

We also got to touch starfish, urchins, sharks, sting ray, and anemones.

From there we headed South towards Florence in search of some seals and/or sealions.

We found some…

pelicans…

big waves…

blow holes…

tide pools…

treasures…

and finally some seals and sea lions!

We had to do some hiking and rock climbing, but we were able to get a little closer.

Mostly Harbor Seals, but there were a few Sea Lions there as well.  They were all sunning themselves on the big rocks.

I would have to say that the best thing we found were lots of smiles and good memories!
